Green Tomato
(11 Posts)This may be a really daft question, do tomatoes need sunshine to turn red?
We have a really good crop of "tiger toms" but they are not going red.
Any thoughts welcome, thanks.
Yes.
Mine are all green.
There has been no sushine.
We have had red toms in the past but this year has been crap.
So, who has the best green tomatoe chutney recipe?
Mmm, green tomato chutney, never thought of that!
Fried green tomatoes are amazingly good. I actually picked some of my crop early last year, to eat them before they turned red.
Ased my mum (Uber Grdener) about this as in same situation
She said not to worry until first frost, as they can turn up until then: otherwise leave in a paper bag on sunniest windowsill and hey'll turn
HTH
So can i pick green toms and put them on the windowsill till they turn red?
Every single on of my toms are green!
me too! I just looked up Delia's chutney recipe, and it uses up some of those cooking apples as well! I have to and find something called 'pickling spice' though - anyone know if its absolutely compulsory?
This look s nice...
Green tomato salsa
6 green tomatoes, coarsely chopped
1 jalapeño, large, seeded and finely chopped
6 green onions, finely chopped
1 1/2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice or red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon salt
freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1/4 cup sweet onion, finely chopped
pickling spice is easy to find in supermarkets. esp as no doubt Christmas stock will b in soon
I have green toms too - plenty of them - put some on the windowsill to try to ripen - dnt know how long they will take though!
Green tomatoes will ripen more quickly if you put a banana (or banana skin) with them. It's the same chemical thingy which makes fruit go off if you put bananas in the fruitbowl.
