Gardening

Sastakoon or Juneberry?

I've just discovered this seemingly wonderful plant and think they'd be ideal for my small front garden where I'd like a row of fruit trees but also attempting colour as well.

Of course I've now found several types! I like the look of the Amelanchier 'La Paloma' Snowy Mespilus Tree especially the leaf colour.

However Crocus and Waitrose are selling Amelanchier alnifolia 'Northline' and calling it a
Serviceberry/Saskatoon bush.

A random blog I found seemed to say that saskatoons are different to juneberries.

Is a sastakoon the same thing as a juneberry/ service tree?

Does the Northline have good autumn colour too?!

Id probably choose fruit over colour but it would be nice to have all three. I feel I need to be a member if the rhs to find out! Google is being rubbish!

Common names vary a lot and don't always mean the same plant.

If in doubt, go by the latin name on the label rather than the common name.

I clicked on this mistakenly thinking it was a baby name thread! Grin

Anyway, a sastakoon is the same genus as a juneberry but not the same species (although confusingly the western juneberry is the same!).
