Growing cacti from seed?

Just wondering how easy/difficult this is and how much success is likely from a batch of seeds?

Do you have a lot of patience? They can be quite easy, depending on species, but they are not quick growers - it will probably take a few years for them to get to a reasonable size. The best species for a beginner are Mammillarias and Rebutias, the latter can flower in just two years from seed. However, I suspect you might start with a packet of mixed species which will probably contain Opuntias and some taller cerioid species among others. But that would give you an idea how easy/difficult it is to grow them.
Best to start in March/April, sowing the seed on the surface of gritty compost ( JI plus fine grit about 50/50 works well), covered initially with clear plastic or cling film as they need light to germinate. They usually start to germinate after about a couple of weeks (again, depends on species), and should be kept in light shade - I.e. Not full sun, for a few months. Once they reach about 1cm, they can then be potted into small pots in the same type of compost and given as much light as you can.
Good luck!

Thanks a lot Nan have had a look at area YouTube videos and yes they seem very slow! Will have a stab at it anyway, the seeds aren't expensive so nothing to lose. Would it be a total waste of time to try now? My brightest room is at a fairly constant temp all year round?

I would wait a few months I think, (which is the advice I give to all newbies to cacti - I know the eagerness to get started!) by which time the days will be getting longer and warmer, and a much better start to life.
It's useful to give bottom heat (via a heated propagator) but as long as the ambient temperature is around 18-25 degrees, it shouldn't be a problem.
