Steep slope and weeds

We have a really steep slope in our garden that is currently covered in all sorts of weeds. Ideally we'd like to terrace it but finances won't allow that so does anyone have any suggestions for something cheaper to control the weeds?

We have a few shrubs and small fruit trees on it we'd like to keep so don't want to have to spray weedkiller around.

It's so steep you can barely walk on it so digging is tricky (clay soil too). We tried bark but it just washes down in the rain.

What about getting some wildflower seeds and spreading it across the whole area?

If you get rid of all of the vegetation it will turn to mud and erode away. Its much better to have something there so the roots bind everything together

Hardy geraniums are foolproof and maintenance-free. Will spread to cover the slope. G. macrorrhizum makes dense groundcover, pink or white flowers.

Is it sunny or shaded?

Thanks smile

I did think about wild flowers and just letting it go but the grass gets tall and I'd be worried about what was living in there so close to the house (rats?) and it would be difficult to control as it's too steep for a lawnmower.

One side is completely shaded so doesn't have many weeds at all - the other is partially sunny (west facing).

I'll look at the plants you suggested aircooled.

Vinca minor and Bugle (Ajuga) are good ground cover for shade.

We have a couple of slopes in our new garden and I’m going with wild flowers and bulbs. No maintenance (or at least, very little) and lots of beautiful stuff for most of the yearsmile
