Definitely poppy - most likely with mauve flowers. Second is teasel. Both self seed like crazy.

thanks all for your excellent knowledge!

The self-seeding would explain some of the teasel positioning. There are some at the back of a very deep flower bed, where they look nice. But some are at the front of the bed too where I think they just look far too mall - makes sense that perhaps they weren't meant to be there.

Might you all be able to help with another plant please? It's rather huge and looks on the verge of flowering. Any idea what it might be?

Yes,hollyhock. You will need to push a steak into the ground and tie it in, or it will collapse under it's own weight.

Or try pushing a stake into the ground, steaks tend to be a bit floppy unless they are very well done... Grin
