What do i need to get the edges of lawn against fence tidy?

The grassed area of our garden runs up against both left hand and right hand fences.

DP mowed lawn for first time yesterday and the lawn looks great, but the lawn doesnt get close enough to the fence to finish the edges.

Most of the edge now seems to be a mix of long grass and weeds.

What would be the best way of keeping the edges tidy?

Long term we want to plant some borders, but with a newborn due any day we wont have the time or energy to get around to that this summer.

Buy a strimmer, it will tidy the edge in no time.

I use a strimmer (if I can be bothered to untangle the cable) or shears (if I can't). I try to move the clippings away from the edge, then the mower picks them up and I don't end up with grass clippings being walked through the house.

YES to long handled shears.

What you need is a spade and to cut/dig the edges out. DH used to do it for me. Gives the lawn a lovely tidy look.

I use a rake to comb the grass away from the fence, that way when I mow up to it it pretty much gets it all.

I'm with myoriginal, but I cut only about an inch out, at an angle, with an edging tool. It's just enough to allow the mower to get to it. (Where I do it is against a rope style edging.)

I cut all of my lawn edges with scissors, so does my mum, everyone laughs at us but it doesn't take that long and looks great.
