My best friend would like one of these in her garden. I have no idea what it you? (She wasn't pleased with my initial learned opinion that it is a triffid).

It's Echium pininana. Easy from seed but takes two or three years to flower. Not hardy except in mild areas, or protected corners of your garden

Not sure from the picture but this could be the white form Snow Tower, but it's naturally blue/mauve
