What is this purple blossom?

I discovered a very nondescript shrub, went on holiday for 2 weeks and it's turned into this. Does anyone have any idea what it is? Thanks

lilac. The problem with lilac is that it is a veyr boring non descript shrub for 11 months of the year. then is flowers and it is lovely and you could forgive it anything, then it finishes and you have another 11 months of boredom!

Exactly! I'd been hacking away at it trying to cut it back as it was everywhere at the back of my overgrown garden I'm trying to tame. I left a few bits, went on holiday and came back and it was suddenly all lovely!
