What should I do with this flimsy houseplant?

I've had this plant for as long as I can remember and have no idea what it is or where it's from. It has sat in various parts of our house, most recently the bathroom, gathering dust and gradually becoming more and more sparse.
Can I redeem it? What is it? Where should I put it to help it thrive?

That looks like a fig to me. Mine has 'ficus' on it's label. I have one that looks a bit healthier than yours. Mine is in a sunny room but not direct sunlight and I never overwater it. I've had it for years.
Half of yours looks healthy - is it in a draught or something? If you keep turning it around might the back bit perk up a bit?

Hmmmm maybe... Should I try cutting some of the long/spindly/dead-looking bits or just leave them?

If you do prune it just cut a third or quarter off.
I think I did this and white stuff came out - maybe wear gloves. It might have been a change in temperature or draughts that did it.
Mine recovered well and is still alive anyway!

Yes, I was going to say it looks like it needs a new pot with new soil and some feed!

If you cut it back and keep it watered and fed, it should bounce back!
