Pull the dead leaves away in spring - use gloves! (Be aware slugs and snails like to hide deep down between the leaves.) You could try dividing it by chopping down between the 'fans' but try to leave roots on both sides. If it flowers, leave the flowers on until the stems die off and dry out, then pull off.
