Gardening virgin - re-seed or re-turf a lawn?

We've recently moved and after a depressingly long and expensive period of renovation we're now in a position to spend a bit of cash on the garden.

The lawn we've inherited is mainly moss and weeds. The previous owners weren't keen gardeners and our builders used the garden as a storage area cum toilet.

We want to have wall to wall lawn and cover the existing weed beds. Would killing the weeds in the lawn and re-seeding be better than re-turfing? Re-seeding would be cheaper but which option would be longer lasting and lower maintenance?

Thanks

Oh don't just do lawn with no beds, it will be extremely dull!

Different difficulties in establishing seed or turf but long term, it's still lawn and needs maintenance.

Scarifying moss
Aerating
Feeding
Killing/ removing weeds
Mowing
Edging (much harder if it butts up to the boundary fence!)
