Pruning hornbeam hedge

I planted a hornbeam hedge using whips 3.5 years ago. Some have grown well, others which are more exposed are a little behind. I've just lopped bits off here and there up to now, but should I be properly trimming it now ? I remember something about "cut strong in summer, cut weak in winter" but I'm not positive ? We're past nests in hedges time of year and I would able to be able to get down the path.

I don't know but I am thinking of planting a hornbeam hedge myself and just wondering how tall they are after 3 years?

At the moment we have a fence down one side of the garden which is covered in ivy and rotting away. Our neighbours on the other side have a beech hedge. One of our fence panels has come down and unfortunately our neighbours hedge is a bit bald below the level of the fence on our side due to chronic lack of light so I don't think nicking their hedge is going to be an option!

Would love to hear your experiences, I am very much a novice so the idea of planting a full on hedge is a bit daunting!
