Hard to tell from photo but looks like but is a low growing spreading type of plant ?

Ha! photographed like that it looks a bit like cannabis. But I've got something like that in my garden and I'm sure it is a weed. Why do you need to know the name? Just weed it out. Iirc correctly it grows a long spike that has small blue flowers on it around September.

I think it's not a weed. Let it grow a bit and see what happens.

It has dried twigs sticking out of it which look like last years flower stems, could it be some sort of Michaelmas daisy type thing?

It's not verbena bonariensis is it? the leaf shape looks similar but the surface is normally a bit rough/textured and maybe this is too shiny?

Not sure, but I have a verbena rigida that has leaves a bit like that. (They are too wide for verbena bonariensis, I think).
