What to do in the garden right NOW

Hello guys,

I'm wondering if you all might indulge me with a thread to remind and help people with what to be doing in the garden at any given moment (right now...)

I'm no expert, but would love to be able to read along and make sure I'm doing all the things I should be.

Am I right in thinking now is the last chance for the major Spring pruning? How soon before it is really sensible to plant bedding plants?

Thanks

too late for spring pruning.
bedding plants, maybe wait for a couple of weeks, ground is still too cold.
mulching and weeding is on my agenda, and tending to seedling inside to be ready for planting out soob.

Are you planting summer flowering bulbs yet?

Today I dead-headed all my spent daffodils. I'm not a great gardener but I know my mum (who was) did this.

I've been

  • dividing perennials and things like bamboo
  • moving around plants that have outgrown their place or are in the wrong place
  • planting out first batches of perennials or biennials I've hardened off in the cold frame (e.g. primulas, aquilegias, foxgloves)
  • deadheading spring bulbs
  • ordering nematodes to cope with the slug problem caused by a mild winter (still need to do this!)
  • thinking about mowing the lawn! (I need to do this by hand for a bit because there are bulbs in it that are flowering. Fortunately, it's small).

At the allotment, I'm planting asparagus and potatoes this week, and tying in my espaliered trees more tightly.

In the greenhouse, I'm:

  • sowing some April seeds, ready to plant out after the last frost in May. Things like sweetcorn, courgettes, pole beans
  • potting on seedlings I've already got on: tomatoes, chillis, aubergines, celery, celeriac, cosmos, dill etc.
  • still bringing things indoors if it's cold at night. I have an app called IFFT which texts me if there is going to be a frost below 5C

A frost? A temperature! Apologies!
