So, we now have a large garden, it's pretty much a blank canvas with lots of potential. It divides up very neatly into very clear areas as follows

Front garden is 3 shingle terraces. Will have an old boat planted with maritime plants on the middle terrace and bay tree by front door

Large terrace off kitchen and dining room had a shady bed under mature cherry, camellia, lace hydrangea and ficus. Underplanting with shade loving perennials like hosta, hellebore and woodland bulbs. Pots around seating area and going up the steps. Planting jasmine, clematis to climb walls.

Up steps is lawn, fruit trees and a large, undultating border which will be cottage garden. We have a summerhouse, a large, round weeping tree which will be a den for dd and a long, straight bed which i plan to fill with cutting flowers. There is a steep bank which will have succulent s and alpines, and a patio outside dd's room for her fairy garden

Behind summerhouse is a walled vegetable garden where we will be growing fruit and tender veg (we have an allotment for less demanding crops). We're getting a few chickens up here too.

Anyway, i have been offered a free 2x2m pond liner and am now thinking that it would be fun for dd if we made a little wildlife pond in the corner of the veg garden and also helpful. For snail and slug reduction. Are they really bothersome to build ? And are they a lot of work to keep looking nice ? I don't want a formal pond, more boggy plants to attract dragonflies and slug munching frogs.

We have a little one for the frogs and it doesn't take a lot of work. We have a grid on to stop people falling in but its got lots of grasses growing out of it so you don't see it as somewhere to walk IYSWIM.
The only maintainence we do is a trim 1-2 a year

Your garden sounds lovely. I think a pond by your veg patch is a great idea.
