Looks like white buddleia to me.

the flowers are buddleia-like, but i'm not sure it is a buddleia. the rest of the plant isn't a bush as such, just a stem with leaves coming off. and the flowers are a lilac sort of colour.

it is big - probably 6 foot high. each flower stem is a different plant.

There's a giant lobelia that looks a bit like that... but there wouldn't have been humming birds on it there!

I do know what it is but I've forgotten the name. Our neighbour has one in her garden. We are in Jersey and so I guess they are quite tender. I'll look it up and be back!

claude I think the shitty stick is a reference to bum-wiping devices of back in the day. The Romans used a sponge on a stick in their communal crappers, hence the expression, getting hold of the wrong end the stick.:o
