We use coils, but in burners, tins about 5" diameter by 4" deep, score with holes. They have a handle on the top and we hang them on hooked metal stakes. They're widely avaliable in Oz, and come packed with coils.

If you google mortein mosquito coil burners, you'll see what I mean. They are not expensive and very effective. They rust very easily. I don't know if they're sold outside Australia.

We had always used citronella candels and they are good. Our latest purchase is citronella oil lantern, but we haven't had a chance to give it a try yet. It is only £5 at our local garden centre.

Oil lanterns and bamboo torches filled with citronella oil are more effective than candles in my opinion (maybe because of the bigger flame? just guessing). Poundland have bamboo torches in at the moment smile
