Gardening

taming an area full of weeds

There is an area in our garden that has been filled in over the years to bring it up to the height of the lawn. This area is overgrown with weeds, not now of course but come summer it'll be waist height in weeds, mostly nettles.

I would like to do something to this area, get rid of the weeds mainly.
Maybe grass seed or a rockery. Im not sure.

Weeds are starting to appear so is now the time to be covering it with a weed killer?
I am useless at gardens. Please shower me with your expertise.

The area is a long strip of around 2-3 metres by about 7 metres long.

Can i use weed killer and then put down grass seed? i'm guessing its not just as simple as that!

How quickly do you need it clear? If very quickly, use a contact weed killer. You can then rake up the dead weeds and re-seed. If you have longer and don't want to use chemicals, cover with thick black plastic or old carpet and leave for a few months.

I've read somewhere recently that you can use vinegar to kill weeds - much much cheaper than using weedkiller - but have yet to try.
