Using a flame gun to clear overgrown area??

Our back garden has been left to its own devices since I discovered I was pregnant (DD is now 13 months old blush) and as such looks like a jungle is slightly overgrown.

Most of it is pretty sortable but we've an area of roughly 25' square that includes a overgrown lawn and a couple of empty beds (was in the process of re-designing at the time). There is quite a bit of bind weed and really coarse grass growing everything together with various, quite pretty, weeds.

Lots of cats in the area so not overly keen on nuking it with chemicals and really need to clear some of the vegetation before we can get near to start digging.

Looking into hiring a strimmer and saw a flame gun. Has anyone used one? We'd be looking to clear everything in the area as we need to level off and terrace so this looks quite tempting - and DH wants to play wink.

TIA

The problem with a lot of the flame guns is that they only kill the top of the weed not down to the roots. Your real choices are weedkiller or hand weeding. Both of these will work, eventually. It is worth looking at the weedkiller route as many dont leave residues in the soil - you need to read the labels closely.

Handweeding will also work. Even bindweed eventually takes the hint.

Thanks Gnome - it's all change now as we've decided to sell the house so it will be a case of getting the garden to look presentable enough for that smile

Good luck with that then!

Flame gun is the only option for weeds that weed killer can't get rid off ie horsetail. Was very successful in our garden and better for plants than chemicals
