I need to turf a section of my garden that previously had a patio on it, so the area is covered with sand (previously under the flags). I thought I'd have to move all of the sand and then turf it. But people keep telling me I can lay the turf on the sand. Anyone know if this is true?
Grass grows pretty much anywhere and, if you're getting turf, then it's got a layer of soil to grab onto. I have a patch of sandy garden from having a drive laid once. The sand has quickly got mixed in through digging and worm action. Drains well Rather than shifting the sand, if you dig in some compost or top soil before flattening it and laying the turf, you might get better results.
