Laying turf on sand/soil?

I need to turf a section of my garden that previously had a patio on it, so the area is covered with sand (previously under the flags). I thought I'd have to move all of the sand and then turf it. But people keep telling me I can lay the turf on the sand. Anyone know if this is true?

Grass grows pretty much anywhere and, if you're getting turf, then it's got a layer of soil to grab onto. I have a patch of sandy garden from having a drive laid once. The sand has quickly got mixed in through digging and worm action. Drains well :) Rather than shifting the sand, if you dig in some compost or top soil before flattening it and laying the turf, you might get better results.

I bloody hope you can lay turf on sand, as my house is built on what was a sand dune.:o
