Gardening for novices?

Can anyone recommend a website with lots of advice for beginner gardeners. I don't even know what I want to do, so no specific questions I can ask here. Very much on a budget and all my green fingered family are many miles away. Moved house last year and just let the garden be to see what was in it. Want to be a bit more proactive this year and learn alongside toddler DD. Have got some flower seeds and compost, so will start there once I've found some seed trays.

The BBC gardeners world website is pretty good. Also,do you have any neighbours who are keen gardeners? If there is one thing that gardeners love doing it is passing on advice [and surplus plants].Good way of meeting people in a new area too.If you walk by someone working in their garden, just say something like 'oh what a beautiful garden, you obviously put a lot of time into it,do you mind me asking what that plant is?' More often than not they are very pleased to be complimented and will happily chat about what they've done or give advice.

have a look here

I am only a novice so there may be better sites to try, but there are a collection of basic guides on there.

Previously, it has always been trial and error, we did'nt follow instructions just let 5yr old dd pick some seeds to plant and see what happens - had some funky hanging baskets over the years Grin

Budget wise, check out the 99p shop/£1 shop. They sell everything from seeds to compost - we stocked up in there yesterday. Also, have a look at everyday items you can recycle as seed trays etc such as egg boxes.

There's lots of advice too on the Royal Horticultural Society website.
