Congratulations to you! My husband retired 2 years ago now after a similar time in the army and I have to say that the only thing he misses is the tours and the camaraderie but is glad to see the back of most else.
We had planned on a trip to Australia to make the transition to civvy street a little easier, but had a baby instead. I still think a trip away to mark the break would have been a good idea.
You made me laugh when you said about his naivete as I remember thinking that my husband was pretty daft but everything is done for them in the army and it takes them a while to find out how to run things on the outside.
I did notice that my husband puts down most people he meets (business-wise) in civvy street as having "no idea". It takes a while to settle in but still not sure that dh doesn't think most of the world is incompetent and useless (got to lower his standards!).
Enjoy yourselves and if I have two words of advice:
take a trip away to mark the transition and
take photos of him in his uniform as it probably won't fit him for much longer!
