What is his diet like? Does he take a lot of water? Do you give him high-fibre foods like: prunes, blueberries, grapes, sweetcorn, etc etc?

He has no breastmilk now? How much formula does he take?

Try the "P" diet. Pears, peaches, prunes and peas! Always worked for ds.

I'd wait another month before you try the cows milk ?
My DD suffers, although she has got herself in to a cycle with it. Have you been given lactulose ? it's completely foul but softens the stools. Can be bought over the counter or by perscription. I add it to DD's milk ( she is 2) & I also add an extra oz of water to milk.

Also try strawberries/kiwi/raspberries - all raw & the little Actimal yogurt drinks - can get the natural ones. These helped DD for while.

I would say is the milk, I would recommend to go back to formula for a couple of months.

PS. Do you have allergies in the family?, if so it would be agood idea to avoid cows milk as a main drink until he is at least one yr old.

my dd suffers from constipation also and she,s allergic to dairy, ifound the only thing that works is to give her some raisins, she has a handful everyday and it seems to do the trick

If it is a 'regular' problem (no pun intended) then go back and see your doctor asap. My dd when through a phase of this and it was hellish. The sooner it is sorted the better, as you don't want thepoor little chap remembering that pooing=pain, or he may well do what dd did and withold poo. If simple diet changes don't solve it (and soon IYSWIM) go see the doctor, ask for a referal if possible.

yep - agree with the pears and raisins! my DD has had dairy allergy - would steer well clear for as long as possible. Also avoid bananas. Can make it worse apparently. Weetabix also seemed to help.

vickitiredmum · 18/08/2005 22:34

just to clarify - bananas make constipation worse not the dairy allergy worse!

ds loves weetabix but am now thinking that because he is not drinking enough the fibre is making it worse..don't know..

Maybe he has other food allergies, gluten etc, which is making him constipated. Get your GP to refer him to paediatrician. Insist on it. They do say that you might have to introduce a food to a child up to 17 times before they accept it. One other option could be to exclude all foods except his soya milk and reintroduce things slowly.

knew what u ment re bananas its ok.. although i always thought that they made the matter worse until i read annabel karmel book and it mentions banana and prune fool recipe for constipation (tried and tested not for ds)..
Also cooked 4 oz rhubarb that did the trick and was ok for 4 weeks aaaa that was an amazing month..but back to normal constipated again..once again tried since then - not working now

my dr said to come off of the soya milk, well he was on silica then opium (homeopathic tabs) from dr and soya then lactolus so we never knew which one was gonna work.. turned out the only thing dr is keeping going is the lacto.. but yeah gonna go to dr again and get another referral, last ped. said he was ok and "some babies are just well constipated" we even took pictures of his amazingly long and hugh poos as i felt the dr's all thought i was a mad obsessive mother but that never worked!
