Are all pumpkin varieties edible?

I have seen some pumpkins with the label "edible" on them. Does this mean some pumpkin varieties are not edible? Is there any way of knowing if a pumpkin I bought off the street is edible? Thanks.

It probbaly refers to smaller pumpkins and squashes than are sweet and delicous and bigger 'carving' punpkins that are edible but much more watery.

Ah so it is more that the flavour might not be as good, rather than some varieties are inedible? I have a largish pumpkin which was carved, but I don't want to waste it. It would be ok in soup surely?
