Didn't we used to have a wine club? White wine advice needed please!

Did I imagine the wine club topic?

Anyway - going to a 'pot luck' dinner party tonight and I'm taking white wine. I know where I am with red wine but I don't really drink white wine (ie., I'll drink it if a)there's nothing else b) I'm p*ssed) and I don't know much about it. I know I don't like Chardonnay. I think German white wine is supposed to be cr@p. I know Lambrini, Lambrusco, Piat D'Or, and Concord are dreadful. I think Pinot Grigio is trendy atm. That's it.

So suggestions please? If you have actual names that's great, but grape varieties would be helpful too. Tesco or M&S for preference if you're naming names, but I can do Sainsbury's at a push.

Oh and not too expensive please as I reckon I need about three bottles - around a fiver is OK.

Thanks in advance.

Tesco Californian Viognier is very good value I "discovered" it myself and since then have read at least two proper reviews of it. it has a screw top which i personally think is better but may not be for you. It is either 3.99 or 4.99 but that is not reflected in the tasting.

Sancere/white burgundy's/white rioja's are nice. Or Saint Veran.

I went for the Viognier (Tesco Finest £4.99) in the end. Bought 3 bottles and 2 boxes of chocs and some flowers for the hostess.

Then she bl*dy cancelled, at 6pm by text message. Bl*dy dh problems she says - they've only been married since November!

Am peed off - have had afternoon from hell with Demon Chile (up at 5.30 so cranky as hell but has refused to sleep) and was really looking forward to a girlie night out (well, in, but ykwim)

And now I will have to drink the wine and eat the chocs all by myself so that's the diet tits up!
