I've jyst finished cooking a chicken curry for lomorrow's lunch but it's still quite hot. I want to go to bed soon.
Should I put in itno the fridge still warm or should I leave it out overnight?

put it in the fridge. the quicker it cools down the better

i'd put it in the fridge now. and the flavours will be much better tomorrow. yum.

I would leave it out as it will raise the temp of your fridge otherwise.

put the lid on and stick it in the oven overnight.

yes you can.

I'd wait a bit for it to cool a little as increases fridge temp. Then it will taste scrummy tomorrow as the flavours will have developed.

By all means leave it in the oven with a lid on if you want to risk food poisoning.

depends HOW hot it is. it won't increase fridge temp THAT much.
you could turn the fridge temp down and stick it in to counteract and heat from the curry.... also depends how big your fridge is... the bigger the fridge the less likely it is to affect the temp!

my fridge instructions say it is ok to put hot food in the fridge as it can cope with it.

my mil lleaves her curries on the kitchen table for upto a week at a time. she hasnt died of food poinsoning yet...

thanks. I'll go and read for 20 mins or so before going to bed then to let it cool a bit more then put it in fridge. Fridge is larder style so large enough I hope that it wont affect temp too much then.

id wait for it too cool, I always think curry tastes better the day after.

Stick the container in a bowl of ice to cool it quickly and then put in fridge.

I'd go with Enid's advice actually.

Are you totally confused yet by the conflicting advice on this thread?

Probably way too late for mckenzie's curry now anyway

NannyL - chicken curry left out for one night is not that likely to give you food poisoning. Putting it in the fridge whilst still warm and risking raising the overall ambient temperature of the fridge is far more risky.

Yes I expect she went to bed over an hour or so ago!

the longer something is left in the "risk zone" the more chance bacteria have to develop.

Leaving a chicken curry(or anything else for that matter), in an oven all night gives those bacteria HOURS to multiply. This is very risky.

A warm curry will NOT reduce the overall temperature in the fridge to dangerously high levels, especially if you have quite a large fridge.

nannyl, i repeat, my mil regularly leaves all her curries out on the kitdhen table. regardless of ambient temperature. only when they are finished or being reheated do they get removed from the kitchen table. some curries have been known to take a week to finish.
and the cow hasnt had food poisoning yet. neither did i for that matter when i was pregnant and living with her. no matter how much i tried to educaate her about bacteria!!!!

Way too late for mckenzie's curry, but a good way to cool something down rapidly is to pop it into water, e.g. put casserole dish into washing up bowl and fill bowl with cold water. After a short time (e.g. length of time it takes to get ready for bed!) it will be much cooler and you can put it in the fridge.

well I have always done stews and curries this way and no food poisoning yet

I reckon it's pretty hard to get food poisoning, quite honestly. Either that or I'm hardened - my (Indian) uncle - a rather eminent neurologist - never put any food in the fridge that I can remember (and he lived in South India).

Reheated or cold rice hasn't finished me off either.

No a good idea to leave hot food out.
