why is a smoked mackerel filllet so much higher in cals than a fresh one?

what happens in smoking that makes weight watchers almost double the points value?

Is it like raisins which are more calorific than grapes? because they are sort of dehydrated?

Exactly, as an item has less and less moisture, its relative calorific value by weight will go up. However as you would tend to eat less of a product in that state I would imagine it would balance it out a bit.
