Does anyone freeze sandwiches for lunch boxes?

I watched a programme where an "expert" was saying that a mum should freeze a weeks worth of sandwiches for the DCs pack lunches to save time on a daily basis.

Does anyone actually do this?

Every night I make cheese, cheese and marmite, tuna mayo and sweetcorn, and philly and ham sandwiches and although the children love them I am a bit bored of making the same thing over and over again! So I thought about making a batch and freezing them but would love to hear others experiences before I experiment on my DCs!

I do vary the breads (rolls, pittas, bagels, wraps etc) to increase the excitement

No but I have thought about doing this also. I wonder if the bread would go soggy as they defrost...

Freeze sandwiches?! I've never knew this was an option.

My mum used to do this (or rather, she used to get me to do it) and they were horrible when defrosted. All soggy and narsty.

Some fillings don't freeze well either.

My friend does this- seems to work ok.
My ddmakes the lunchboxes now, so I'm ahappy bunny!

Eek. That idea doesn't appeal to me even if it is practical.

We used to do this and was fine. and made your lunch box nice and cool and was all defrosted by lunchtime.

did a weeks worth on a sunday night and then you didnt have the issue with bread being stale by friday.

(although buy freshest bread you possibly can and fridays sarnies may still be a touch dryer than mondays)

Also don't cut your cheese slices too thick or in fact make the filling too thick as you may find it hasn't defrosted in time. Somethings work much better than others so experiment- I found ham sarnies worked best of all; You don't want to do it if you put an ice pack in their lunchbox as they won't defrost properly.

I strongly recommend doing this and can't say have ever had a problem with soggy sarnies (but imagine you would if you used salad, tomato or cucumber as freezing will cause plant cells to burst and cause a soggy mess)

Yes - I freeze ds' rolls. He only has a packed lunch once a week, so I buy a 6 pack of rolls and freeze the rest. Ham, cheese and nutella all work well.

However, I know from past expeirence that tomato does not freeze well (althuogh I wa a strange child and didn't mind the soggy frozen tomato sandwiches that my mum used to give me )

I will admit to the idea not appealing to me too much in term of quality. I would be devastated if the DCs didnt like them or they were too soggy because my DCs wouldnt eat them and then go hungry.

I am just a tad fed up with making and the thoughtof making the sandwiches every day.

Nope and never would and if I did my dh would divorce me on grounds of being cruel to our dc's. We have both suffered frozen sandwiches as children and think it is a bad thing to do. Nasty soggy, yuk - in fact I still don't really like sandwiches now.

I do know what you mean about maing sandwiches every day. We (I say we because dh actually makes the dds sandwiches) have got round the monotony by letting them have a school meal twice a week. It is bloody expensive though. Would that be an option for you?

I do try to encourage them to have a school meal but they dont really like the choices available to them. They have, today, asked if they can have a school dinner when its "Roast dinner day" so thats 1 day less for 2 of them.

I seem to recal that the MN backed solution to soggyness is to avoid salad and to wrap sarnies in a folded over piece of kitchen towel which wicks any water away from the bread as it defrosts, thus preventing soggy issues.

We always had this - and I did use to do this for DH. No problem at all - bread absolutely fine - pate, cheese, ham, all worked well. sandwiches lovely and cool at lunch time too.

I still do it in the summer, and grab some out of freezer when we go out for the day.

friend of mine is a teacher with Dh and 2 DC, she spends sunday afternoon making 20 sets of sandwiches for them all for the week, various fillings, then they grab pot luck out of the freezer each day. seems to work for her - she has a freezer drawer reserved for them!

Oh and if we self cater DCs parties, leftover sandwiches are frozen for Dhs packed lunches
