If you eat a lot of fish, where do you buy it and how long do you keep it for?

I want to start eating more fish. I go to a weekly farmers market where there is good fish and I would happily buy it there, but I would guess it needs to be eaten in the day or two after you buy it.

If you buy at a supermarket, is it as fresh? And how long does it keep?

You can freeze it. Then it lasts forever (well nearly)

If you're near a city, try the Chinese supermarket. They have a huge choice, it's very fresh and it's half the price of the mainstream supermarket.

They weigh the whole fish and then fillet it for you. You can keep the head and bones etc for stock, if you want.

We try to eat fish 3 times a week. I buy it on the day of eating from our local supermarket. It really is best to eat fresh fish on the day you buy it.

Frozen fish isn't all bad though - in much the same way as frozen veg it is often "fresher" than fresh fish IYSWIM.

I agree that fish is a lot better eaten on the day you buy it, but also it depends where you live.

Apparently, the fishing boats that serve my area (NW) go out Monday to Friday, so the fish is fresh in Tues to Sat. It follows that if you're buying fish (in a restaurant or shop) on a Monday, it's already a couple of days old, and who knows about how scrupulous supermarkets about discarding older fish?

I would have a chat with your fishmonger at the farmers market and buy some to eat fresh and some to freeze and see what you think.
