I really need a good recipe for roasted cat. If not roasted, then fried would be OK.

Cover it with butter cream and pretend you've made a perfect cat shaped birthday cake?

It's for a child's birthday party, do you think a spit would be safe?

OMG!

Roast Cat as You Wish to Eat It

Source [Libre del Coch, R. Carroll-Mann (trans.)]: 123. Roast Cat as You Wish to Eat It. You will take a cat that is fat, and decapitate it. And after it is dead, cut off the head and throw it away because it is not for eating, for they say that eating the brains will cause him who eats them to lose his senses and judgment. Then flay it very cleanly, and open it and clean it well, and then wrap it in a cloth of clean linen. And bury it beneath the ground where it must be for a day and a night; and then take it out of there and set it to roast on a spit. And roast it over the fire. And when beginning to roast it, grease it with good garlic and oil. And when you finish greasing it, whip it well with a green twig , and this must be done before it is well-roasted, greasing it and whipping it. And when it is roasted, cut it as if it were a rabbit or a kid and put it on a big plate; and take garlic and oil blended with good broth in such a manner that it is well-thinned. And cast it over the cat. And you may eat of it because it is very good food.

I am afraid, I am unable to comment on roasted or fried, so unhealthy

May I suggest poaching ? so much healthier recipe for Court Bouillon below

COURT BOUILLON
INGREDIENTS:
1 leek (white part only), coarsely chopped
2 onions, coarsely chopped
3-4 carrots, coarsely chopped
4 stalks celery, coarsely chopped
1 teaspoon whole white peppercorns
2 cups white wine
4 cups cold water
1 bay leaf
Add the chopped vegetables and peppercorns to the water and the wine.
Bring the mixture to boil and reduce to simmer before adding the fish you wish to poach.
This recipe fills a standard poaching pan.

It's not a very fat cat, do you think that would make a difference?

A spit sounds safe enough, except for the cat.

I just thought the 4 year olds might want to get a bit too close, trying to pull the cat's tail and that sort of thing.

Well, what a dashed easy solution. Do I do that before or after I flay it very cleanly?

Why roast it? Many useful ideas here

Report
SoupDragon · 20/05/2005 12:53

After. It's useful to hold the cat whith whilst flaying it.

Wanders off clutching redundant Savlon and plasters.................head hung low and crying very softly.

But those are uses for a dead cat, SaintGeorge. The cat is alive, and will probably still be alive when I put it on the spit.

Don't run away with those plasters and Savlon, LGJ, I might need those for after I put the cat on the spit. She's bound to scratch and claw a bit.

Well I have to say I have no sympathy for it, and it should be grateful that are prepared to roast it, it could be worse, you could wait until it was sitting on a fence, and throw a football at it

Right, I am off out with DS in a few minutes. I shall be most unhappy if this thread has not descended into a full blown scrap by the time I get back.

Ah, my apologies WWB - I had assumed you would be strangling the aforementioned cat before sticking it on the spit (I quite like the toasting fork idea in the book myself ).

I thought it was supposed to make the meat more succulent if they were alive. Perhaps I'm wrong. Besides, I'm relying on it to feed the children at dd's birthday party, so it has to be cooked somehow.
