no

in fact if you do it stuffs it up royally IME
goes rock-hard and grainy and you have to chisel it out

I say no. I have these arguments with DP all the time - he thinks I should keep Branston Pickle in the fridge, I mean, it's a 'preserve', the clue's in the title surely. Sorry, nutella clearly is not a pickle or preserve, just had to take the chance to rant, there's so much clutter in my fridge that really needn't be there it drives me mad. No no no to Nutella. And like everyone else says, it just goes hard and useless...

Ah, I think you can rest your case, if it had to go in the fridge it would say 'refrigerate after opening and consume with x days'. Like, erm, Pesto.

I bought nutella for the first time last week and it said on the label 'do not refrigerate'. DP still put it in the fridge though. Quite annoying as he routinely leaves marg, milk, etc out on the worktop!

I'm not allowing myself to buy it again as every time I went into the kitchen I had to have a spoonful and it lasted about a day.

Thank goodness somebody else understands about keeping things level too! DP eats icecream straight from the tub round the edges creating a mountain effect in the middle... this is because the edges are more melted. I, of course, am forced to eat the mountain, because the icecream must be level.

Refrigerated Nutella is a tragedy. Then you have to try and put it in the microwave to soften it enough to spread it, then you overheat it and it goes grainy.

Dark and cool = cupboard, dark and cold = fridge.

But then, I don't keep ketchup in the fridge, and that does say on the bottle that you should. It's all a conspiracy to make you throw away good food and purchase more....

Oh, I'm with you juwesm, ketchup is in the fridge here due to DP, but left alone I wouldn't keep it there. I also woudln't naturally keep jam in the fridge, as long as you use a clean spoon to get to the jam, and not a buttery knife...

Hmmm, now I do keep jam in the fridge, but only as it seems to develop furry coating fairly quickly. Though as you say, it could be a butter contamination issue. We do do the spoon thing now, so perhaps will investigate.

Weirdly, I keep wholegrain mustard in the fridge, but English and dijon in the cupboard. What's that all about?

Nutella in cupboard as it goes rock hard in fridge but jam always in fridge.

I keep nutella in the jar for about three seconds, after that its fairly much in my tummy. I've just hoovered a jar of it not ten minutes ago. In my defence, I can't drink cos of bf-ing.

But never in the fridge.

[food spoilage scientist hat]
getting butter in the jam does not cause the fur
think about it
butter doesn't go furry, does it?

leaving the lid off lets mould spores in the air settle on the surface of the jam
if you eat it up fast this is fine as you scoff them before they grow
and keeping it in the fridge means it's too cold for them to grow

but letting it hang about with the lid off and then storing it at room temp is a route to fur

No-peanut butter isn't refrigerated either. I read recently that ketchup purveyors are now saying that open ketchup in fridge is only good for three months.
