I have no food in except two pack of mince that have a sell by date of Sunday. How do I know if I can use this or not - chicken smells, what happens with beef?

it smells too, especially when you start to cook it.

it smells, and goes a greeny tinge on dark brown.

brown mince in itself is not indicative of being off. My BIL is a chef, and he says the best beef is brown, not red.....something to do with maturity and so taste, but you will know if it is off.

Sniff it, if it makes you retch it is off

agree any kind of green means it is off too

sniff and see !
Off stuff really smells bad!
I'm fairly confident if it has been refrigerated correctly it will still be fine. Use by dates are a guideline NOT an exact science.

brown just means the blood has congealed (sounds ergh, but isn't) - greeny and smelly is off.

Thank you ladies, I'm just eating my lunch but when I've finished I'll go and sniff. I can't be doing with sell by dates and am too broke to chuck away food that's edible.

You are all fab.

If a chiken is two days past it`s use by date should I still cook it?
