if you strain it it will be even yummier (tea towel and sieve, leave several hours)

Do you sieve it after it has solidified, but before it has cooled down? Or later, after it is cool?

I don't think it will matter.

My mum then used the leftovers in the teacloth to start the next batch.

That's a simple idea. I was telling myself I'd have to be careful to not eat the last spoonful of the last pot. Doing it your mum's way takes care of it right at the start.
