When can babies eat eggs?

I am sure I was told that you shouldn't give babies under 1 years old eggs (scrambled/boiled etc)....is that right?

I think it is a year, but I may be corrected very soon!

I think I started giving well-cooked scrambled eggs at 6 months but I think a year is best advice, both from an allergy pov and from a salmonella one. I'm just boneheadedly optimistic (and scrambled eggs are easy).

I think it is 6 months as long as they are well cooked, I introduced them at around 9 months.

Thanks, think I may venture into scrambled eggs...although I hate them and the smell of eggs makes me retch! But want DS to have a balanced diet!

mmmm think I started about 7-8 months when they started on family food.

Basically the lion brand on eggs means that they are samonella free, so I can't see any harm in starting with eggs from the point of weaning (6 months)

Any allergies in the family (includes hay fever asthma) then leave until 2. The stuff all says egg yolks well cooked at 7 months and then whole egg at 1.

Yes but the well cooked egg yolk thing at 7 months and whole thing at 12 months does not take account of the lion brand and samonella free guarantee - so is misleading and needlessly overcautious.

I agree that with a family history of allergy wait until older though - but not relevent to most people

Thanks Bobbybob, I was worried as my DH has mild asthma and was allergic to eggs as a child (he isn't now)........so maybe I will be spared having to pretend scrambled eggs are yummy!

Although I have to say I would be looking for a cluster of allergies. I have hayfever only (not asthma, eczema etc) and on the basis of hayfever alone I would not deny my children an extremely healthy whole food until they were 2

I would leave whole egg until way over a year then.

The advice is based on the digestability of the protein rather than just salmonella risk, handlemecarefully.

My Dh had bad asthma as a child and also ezcema and hayfever, none of which affects him anymore but his old egg allergy is always a concern to doctors when he has to have vaccinations......
I think I will leave it, DS gets a varied and balanced diet without whole egg thus far, so another 10 months or so is fine to wiat to ensure he is completely Ok with them.

I started DD on eggs at about 8 months this is because she refuses to eat any baby food out of a jar and loves to eat with her hands so eggy bread is great.

As for the Salmonella risk it is very low, all British laying flocks are vaccinated against Salmonella (hence the lion mark) also as long as the yolf is well cooked there should be no risk. (Sorry I'm a food microbiologist)

Lizzylou - on the basis that your dh had an egg allergy I would be tempted to do the same.

I'd leave it until after 1 yr old at the same time trying to get specific advice on this from my GP (who might know more)

Could you ring your local hospital and ask to speak to a dietitian?

I think I will, thats a very good idea...thanks HMC.

It's horrible moving health authority as the HV's and GP's were so lovely at our old place and I'd built a good trusting relationship with them.
