Stocking freezer with meat for slow cooker

I want to do a bulk buy from the farm shop and fill the freezer with good cheap cuts which work well in the slow cooker. I know that the cheaper, fattier cuts work better in the slow cooker. Any specific suggestions? I know there are lots of MN slow cooker fans. Thanks everyone.

Bumping for you.

pork leg meat is cheap and works well as a stewed meat. cheap beef stewing steak is good and goes really tender.

thanks for the reply to mine!!! not sure what's going on with mine at the minute! it smells so good though and everyother pork cassarole i've made has been lovely. well worth stocking up on pork leg meat!

Definitely recommend shin of beef for stewing.

If it smells good it must be cooking OK. Mmmm, don't you love that warm and fuzzy (/ smug and virtuous?) feeling when the slow cooker's going?

Have never tried shin of beef but have been meaning to. Added to the list.

Shin of beef.
stewing steak
chicken thighs.
brisket of beef
silverside (beef)
lamb shanks
neck of lamb
mince

Thats all i can think of at the moment

shin of beef is amazin, it goes really really tender and just melts when you eat it, it's perfect for slow cookers.

meandjoe Tue 13-Jan-09 09:48:59

lol, i love that feeling yep!!!!

lizziemum, tell me about chicken thighs. Thing is, I did them once and I must have over-cooked them, which I didn't think was possible in a slow cooker, cos they kind of disintegrated, including the bones shock. Wasn't very nice. I'm now a bit cautious about chicken in the slow cooker - I obv don't want to undercook it, but my usual timings seem to do just the opposite.

Sorry went to do some cleaning.

I tend to bone and skin them before cooking.

Do a rice and chicken thingy.

1 Large onion - chopped
1 leek - chopped
chicken thighs
some chicken stock
seasoning

then 30min or so before end of cooking i put in a mug of rice and peppers or frozen veg (whatever i have). You may need to add more stock/water.

So you end up with a thick rice and chicken dish.

Only takes a couple of hours to cook.

That sounds good. Do you brown stuff first or not bother?

lizziemun Tue 13-Jan-09 14:04:22

No i'm more a chuck it in and see what happens grin.

Sounds even better grin.
