I think it is 2g for children and 6g for adults.

I still think 2 is alot though. I wouldn't be suprised if thats wrong actually.

I think it is actually 0.5g of salt per day. Wobblynicks was very knowledgable about this on another thread - she should know for sure

its 1.3g of salt (0.5g sodium) for a baby under 2.

kbaby - if it helps you can get some tinned veg in plain water rather than salted water, like most are, for when you don't want to cook, you just have to look carefully at the labels. Plus you can make your own 'baked beans' with a tin of plain beans (no added salt), tomato puree and chopped tomatoes. Watch out for plain yoghurt, strangely a lot of that seems to have salt, but Total greek yoghurt doesn't. Also it seems to be impossible to get low salt sausages but if you can find a good butcher they can make some with only pork, and then the only salt is a small amount from the skins.

....You can tell I've spent ages (too long?) looking into this!!!

I knew it must have been wrong.

Sorry for posting wrong advice.

Nbg, at least you were near, a lot of people seem to think its much higher. Some people think the 1.3g should apply to kids up to 6, which seems to be sensible but 'official guidelines' seem to say 2.

I've become completly salt obsessed since that salt poisoning thing.

On my Dirty Dozen card from Organix it says 0.5g of sodium per 100mg or 1.2g of salt.

I looked up how much salt a baby should have out of interest when dd was about 5 months and have been obsessed since then! Everyone thinks i'm barmy, but some responses are classic. Like my butcher when I first asked for sausages with just pork, very little cereal, no salt please. His assistant looked at me blanky and he said 'the way we used to make them'!! That says it all - so why not make them like that now ffs!!!

I cannot praise him enough for getting involved with this. I would love to shake his hand.

I sent an e-mail to our local MP today about the petition.

Wrote to my local MP but heard nothing back yet, she's probably still reading the letter (2 long pages )

Mine wasn't too long. It said I should wait 2 weeks for a response.

I feel like I should get involved more though.

nbg - to get more involved you go round telling most people you know the virtues of healthy food and how rubbish most stuff is these days and then watch their expressions every time you meet them afterwards, as they wait for you to announce you're knitting your own house for you and 37 of your new age friends to live in.

PMSL!

Nearly died the other day when we went to DH's Grandma's. She cooked us a big fry up (erghhh) and did chips. She left some in a bowl and gave one to dd. DD pushed it away so dh's grandma said Does she want salt on it?!!!!!

FFS How many times do I have to tell people I don't want her eating crap.

MIL wondered as well why my dd threw up all over her cot after she fed her 3 sausages!

Bang, head, brick, wall!!!

Oh no!! God some people are funny! I'm not a total nazi about it, let dd have the odd bit of chocolate etc but compared to a lot of people I seem so strict! Have some friends who offer me chocolate for dd every time they see me and when I say no, can she have an apple they look at me like I've just said can I feed her snails from your garden please!! Then the other week I went with a couple of chunks of very dark choc for dd and when I gave them to her they said, get this "Why don't you try giving her white chocolate, it'll make less mess"!!! Well why don't I just feed her crisps, it'll be cheaper!!

(crisps reminds me - kbaby, watch out for cereal, most of them have way too much salt regardless of the stupid amount of sugar - you can get plain puffed rice, its by Kallo, in a yellow packet, in Asda and I think Sainsburys, can use it for brekkie or snacks or put it in cakes)

I know what you mean. I don't mind dd having a bit of chocolate but not all the time, everyday and instead of meals.

Why is it my family seem to think it's ok to give sweets as an alternative to a meal?

Sorry for Hi jacking your thread Kbaby!

It's all tied in with this 'food is love' malarky - if we give the nicest sweetest sickliest food to our kids we obviously love them sooo much. Errr no, trawling round supermarkets inspecting labels, spending double what most people do on meat, reading through recipe books while dd tries to draw on me, cooking for hours even though I hate it, smiling when I have to throw two thirds of a dinner away when I spent half an hour making it for dd to spend 5 minutes staring at it.....is my definition of love!!

(sorry kbaby, this has turned into a rant now!! Can you tell its one of my bugbears? )

Sorry, I was too busy knitting my new house for my growing family

It's ridiculos really, I give dd the best I can and I just eat rubbish! I must change my ways soon cos she'll start to notice me eating bar after bar of chocolate, pouring salt on my chips and drinking too much fizzy junk!
