Anyone know how long to cook a gammon joint for? It's rolled and tied with string. The butcher said to boil it and then roast it but didn't say for how long.I'm fed up of buying that awful processed 'formed' ham that seems to be everywhere these days so I'm looking forward to enjoying this proper ham if I can get it cooked!
depends how much it weighs - iirc it's 20-30min per 500gso simmer a 1kg ham for an hourI never bother roasting it afterwards as it always seems to dry it outdo it in cider if you have any lying around, and chuck in a halved onion, some pepeprcorns and cloves, carrot, celery etc
Hi Mrs Badger, thanks for your swift response! I wish I'd checked the thread before I went out for the day as I don't have any cider in the house but could have bought some while I was out. Do you think white wine vinegar would work?
no!Nigella does a ham in coca-cola which is meant to be pretty good though...
Apple juice also works
Oh my God!!!!I've just cooked this up tonight. It is gorgeous! A little salty but it's great! Will definately try it again but any idea of how to get rid of the saltyness?
yep - bring to the boil in plain water, drain it, then start over again with the cider/juice, veg etc
