I've just made a batch up with chickpeas, thahini, lemon juice and garlic but it tastes VILE! What am I doing wrong? Had to add some water too as it was too thick.

Buy it. It's sooooo much easier than faffing around with chickpeas and it only costs about 90p a pot.

I think I'm gonna have to agree with you 2cats - what a faff!

don't do it, seriously. The Day Mum Tried To Make Hummous and Spent All Day Retching, Swearing And Throwing Evil-smelling Putty At The Walls has gone down in history at FullMoon Mansion....

It's just soooo annoying as I spent ages trying to find tahini! Bah!

I add greek yoghurt to home made which improves the taste.

Homemade is much nicer than the bought stuff, which is too pappy. Don't go mad with the tahini and try adding a bit of natural yoghurt to it to help to make the texture a bit smoother and the taste a bit more subtle.

Oh yes and it needs olive oil too.

waitrose hummous is delicious. From the deli not the packaged one.

i like it with dried chickpeas, get a nice jellied stock to make it less dry. m&s reduced fat very good too, they get the lemon right.

Too much tahini makes it yak, infuriating i know when you've scoured the delis to find some!

I've had ailures and successes with this, go easy with the tahini and add some olive oil, maybe more lemon juice?

Good luck next time

Did you make it with tinned chick peas or dried?

I do it with tinned - too lazy to cook the dried ones.

Sainsbo's did very good frozen chickpeas for a while but they seem to have stopped stocking them.

Dried is better if you want to make a lot, especially as you should have relatively more chick peas than any other ingredients in the recipe, so it helps you to get the proportions right. I would add some chopped up chilli as well as salt and olive oil as mentioned above.

I gave up and bought some! Maybe I will try again next year!
