Making crust

I bought a packet of it recently and it went down really well with DH on some chicken. However, it was much too peppery for DS.

Having done it once, and having seen what was in the packet, I spotted fairly quickly (oh I'm clever, I know) that I might actually be able to make my own.

So. What do you put in yours?

I hear you can freeze breadcrumbs. What sort of food processor do you need to make them in the first place (I don't have one as yet) Is there an alternative to food processing to make the crumbs?

All sounds a bit basic I know but am interested in what you do with yours. Thanks.

I did once do breadcrumbs by grating toasted bread but it was a bit of a faff. And not very satisfactory tbh.

Smashing up cornflakes in a freezer bag is theraputic and the aftermath is nice to coat chicken with!

Yes, that would be nice for chicken nuggety type thing.

How about a breadcrumb and herb thing? Maybe to put on the top of a bit of fish perhaps?

Can you do them with other crunchy things, maybe put some oats in? Or pine nuts?

I dunno. Any tried and tested ideas here before I serve up something peculiar?

what do you measn by 'crust' and what was it that you bought in a packet? (what is it called?)

Any old food processor will make breadcrumbs for you, or a blender works just as well. Stale bread is easier to make into crumbs.

I use stuffind mix (dry) to coat peices of chicken for fab chicken nuggets. Just coat the chicken first in flour, then in egg and then dip in the stuffing mix and shallow fry.

A nice fish topping is double breadcrumbs to parmesan, salt and papper and a pinch of paprika. Brush the fish with milk and dip in the breadcrumbs to coat and bake.

you could add any herbs you want though to the crumb base, along with any othr flavourings (spices, chilli, lemon zest, cheese, finely chopped mushrooms, garlic, shredded onion etc etc)

Yes, that's what I mean by crust . Sounds interesting too. Thank you.

The one I bought was a Tesco own brand packet called "Crust".
