my mum brought by some leftover meat and potato pie that her friend made for a lunch today

oh yuk I thought, but I am ill tonight so I heated it dutifully up

oh my lord it was lovely. dh is working late and it is all I can do to stop myself eating his half

how do they do it? and cheap - it must be cheap. It has about 6 grammes of mince in it.

I haven't had one for years but used to(family from Lancashire, where they are everywhere, even in chip shops).

You have made me hungry now!

Capp - if you've had a bite, you must now devour the lot and dispose carefully of every last crumb

I have a recipe for meat and potato pie..........

I make it with braising steak rather than minced steak.

500g braising steak diced
1kg potatoes in cubes
3 carrots sliced
1 large onion
3 beef oxo cubes
pastry

Brown the steak and onions in hot oil in a large stockpot / pan.

Cover the steak and onion with boiling water, crumble in 3 oxo cubes, bring up to boiling, turn down to simmer, cover and simmer for 2 - 2 1/2 hours, until the meat breaks up easily.

Add the potatoes and carrots, and more boiling water to cover all ingredients, simmer until the potatoes and carrots are cooked.

Now taste and season, if the gravy needs thickening add some gravy granules, sometimes the potatoes thicken the gravy sometimes not.

I tend to cook pastry "lids" seperately, then place them on top of the bowls of meat and potatoes, but you can transfer the cooked mixture to a casserole dish, place the pastry on the top and cook until the pastry is golden.

It is delish and is the law that everyone in Lancashire can cook it by the time they leave home. I now live "down south", and my southern husband loves it and has been shown how to make it, as has my 5 year old DD.

Hope you like it!

Should be served with red cabbage.

Don't be nervous Capp., this is the only time I use stock cubes and gravy granules, DH is almost obsessive about making his own gravy, so I have a small box of oxo, just for the M&P.

I too am a northern girl (although Yorkshire). I make it as follows:

Brown onion and 1 lb diced braising steak (or stewing/casserole) in slow cooker. Add spoonful of flower to thicken juices. Add water, herbs, worcester sauce and cook (in slow cooker) for a few hours. I always add mushrooms, either at that point or later.

Peel and chop potatoes. Boil.

Make shortcrust pastry.

I always make a base and a top for my pie.

And it is one of my favourite winter recipes.

TBH braising steak cooked slowly makes the most delicious gravy all on it's own. If you coat the meat in flour then that thickens it and it is lovely.

ohmigod - i adore meat and potato pie (am from lancashire) and my DH (from essex) doesn't understand it at all . My mum makes the best one in the world, despite being Irish - she learnt it from my nana (dad's mum).

She uses water and an oxo cube. Nothing in it apart from meat, potato and onions.

Did anyone else spend their teenage years soaking up illicit cider and beer with a Hollands Meat and Potato pie from the chippy?

holidaysqueen yes nothing could beat a plastic 1l bottle of woodpecker and a "meat nd tater" pie.

Kept us warm out on the moors!

How things change, couldn't bear the thought of a pie from the chippy now, though I do enjoy the odd glass of cider, but now it's an organic one from Hereford.

That's what comes of marrying a "southern, shandy drinking, girls party dress, with bows on!"
