little insect in hot cross buns!

We had some waitrose hot cross buns this week, ds2 wanted his right away, so he was merrily eating whilst I was toasting them for the rest of us. He finished and said "ooh look, bugs on my plate"!

There were two tiny, black, hard, with little legs, bugs. I then noticed they were all over my work top, looked inside hot cross bun packet and there they were! Yeuch. What are they?!

I have sealed the packet to take to Waitrose, looked at it again this evening and some are still moving!

Ewww, could they be the things you get if you leave flour open too long, god what are they called....weevils or something?

Make a HUGE fuss to Waitrose tho!!!!

I'd make a big complaint as they should have been baked in hygenic surroundings. It's not like fruit - which you can expect to be occasionally packed with the odd spider etc as they are grown outdoors. But insects in a bakers is NOT good!!

wobblyknicks, I was wondering about those weevily things too but can't remember what I know about them!! I should have got the fresh ones from the bakery counter, but the packet of 6 was the cost of two fresh ones. I'm now paranoid and looking everywhere for these things, it's like when you get the 'headlice' letter from school

But even 'non-fresh' ones should be insect free. As far as I can remember, weevils or whatever they are in flour are safe to eat but obviously shouldn't be there, especially in a product to be sold commercially.

Give them hell though, say that you were really worried that you're ds had eaten them, emotional stress etc etc

Should I take them to the store (I have fear of being fobbed off) or send thru the post to head office? As I bet the little blighters will still be alive and wiggly!

Take it to the store, and cause HELL!!!! Don't be over polite, you will just get fobbed off. Don't be rude obviously but really make a fuss, doubt they'll fob you off, can't afford to.

We had a shield bug in a frozen waitrose garlic bread the other day. We found it only after having heated the bread and it was cooked into it. 10 minutes after discovering it, it started to crawl!!! So it was frozen and then heated and survived. Done some research and found out this is entirely possible.

Waitrose gave us £30.00 compensation.

I am soooo glad I don't shop at Waitrose. Wasn't it Waitrose on the thread about putting returned items straight back out in the shop? And now this .......

They should be good to you. I remember buying something in Sainsbury's which had a load of dead bugs stuck on the outside of the packaging (didn't realise till i got home.)

They told me to go round the shop and take whatever i needed free of charge to clean my home. I thought that was really good of them as i'd literally noticed it straight away and put straight back in bag and to shop, simply wanting a replacement.

So your case is far more serious so expect something from them!!

I'd ring the head office first. No offence to people who work in supermarkets, but the other week I bought some croissants, got home, and discovered they had yesterday's date on them.

'Phoned our local M&S, whose reply was 'It's up to you whether or not you eat them, or you can bring them in for a refund'. FFS!!! The M&S was the one in Oxford, not our local one, and I wondered if they would say the same thing had it been fish or something that could really make you ill.

So I 'phoned up Baker Street HO who were much more sympathetic. Explained that I had no problem with them having yesterday's date on them - no one's fallible - but was shocked at the response from the Oxford store.

Got sent a £10 voucher which was nice but the most important thing to me was to put over this woman's attitude to my complaint.

I'd be really worried about those insects. How many would you say there are???? If their flour had been infested by weevils, you would be enjoying them cooked and with a crunchy coating. They've obviously crept in at some point after baking, and given there's more than one I'd mention environmental health too. Yuuuuuuuk!! Kick up a stink
