I have an idea in my head that it involves meatballs somehow but I might be way off the mark!!

It's a Hungarian dish. It can be quite difficult to get it right. I'd love a good recipe.

I thought goulash was just a sloppy stew?
Fry onion, brown meat, add some paprika, add tin of tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers (optional). Cook until ready. That's my goulash!

Lidl do it in a tin - its not bad really we tried it out for camping food but ate it at home as it was too wet to go

not meatballs!

Beef, onions, tinned tomatoes and lots of paprika (and red peppers if you want)

I love it served with tagliatelle.

That recipe looks good norks.

Don't know if dh will like it though - it seems quite tomato-y. I'm not cooking something special for him only to have him turn his nose up at it.

oh no, don't put potatoes in it if you want something authentic!

Brown the meat and onions in oil and then add a tablespoon of flour and coat it all, and then add the blended up tomatoes, it isn't tomatoey in the same way that an italian dish would be, as it is cooked for ages in the oven. The tomatoes just work as a base for the paprika sauce.

cook it for about 2 hours at least.

Ok, scrap the pasta, it is lush iwth a crunchy leafy salad and warmed up baguettes or ciabatta bread.

The closest recipe I could find on the web to the one my mum (who's polish) taught me to make is here (I'd type out my own recipe but have to rush out on the school run now)

mmmm now I think I'm going to have to get FIL to make some soon.

DP is Hungarian but we both refuse to find out the exact recipe FIL uses so he has to make it for us

How did it go?

I know it's a bit late now but I do remember that FIL chops the onion really really tiny. He wizzes it in the food processor and uses quite a lot. It might be worth trying it out next time.

He made a massive one for DS's christening it was fab

As a smart-arse, I feel obliged to point out that goulash is strictly a soup. What you're describing here is a "porkolt", which is very similar but has less water in it.

Beszelek magyarul egy kiscit!

DP said there are so many different goulash recipes that it is very hard to define. He says whats being described here is actually more of a mix of a "porkolt" and a "goulash" and could also be called a "paprikas". An English person wouldn't be able to tell the difference as they are so similar but a Hungarian person would.

DP also said en is bezelek magyarul egy kicsit
