Please help me
I have hired a number 5 cake tin for ds birthday, but have just realised I have no idea how much ingredients to use as its obviously not your regular 8 inch round.
Anyone know how i work out how much of everything I use??

Can you work out the volume of the tin by filling it with water and then compare it to a standard shape tin you have?

I hired tins and the lady in the shop they were a 4 egg mix IIRC.
You could always phone the shop and ask

hello again, went to do the water test and found that the tin is actually just an outline
Its not sharpe enough to be a cutter so how does that work then !
sorry as you can guess i'm a first timer when it comes to cakes

You lay the tin on a baking sheet lined with greaseproof paper. Then you fill the outline with cake mix.

thank you! silly question but, when I fill with cake mix should it be about half full or a bit more?

Don't fill it too much - I did that first time and all the mixture flowed over the top and underneath. Also, put the tin upside down IYSWIM so that when it comes out, you can turn it the right way and ice the flat surface.

Good luck

tigger, where did you hire one from? I looked at buying one of those number tins and they cost a fortune .

Report
tigger32 · 05/09/2008 18:09

I hired it from a small cake decorating shop in my local town. It cost £5 to hire plus a £20 deposit which is refunded on return of the tin. They are very expensive to buy.
