Is it possible to make muffins by just chucking everything in a bowl?

Because that's what dd2 has just done hmmangry

Basically because she couldn't be bothered to read the instructions ... grrr

So far she has the flour, eggs, sugar, salt, baking powder and milk all in a bowl. I stopped her just before she put the melted butter in.

Is it worth continuing? We have a punnet of blueberries to make blueberry muffins, but I can't afford to buy more on a whim. Or should we start again? (more expense as I'll have to go out and buy more flour)

Can you tell I'm really annoyed? grin

yes - carry on - that basically is how you make muffins - just mix it all together but don't mix too much or they will be tough - it's OK if it's lumpy. Mix blueberries in right at then end.

well it's supposed to be that you add the wet ingredients to the dry and fold it together without mixing it too well. just enough so there is no dry mixture left....but you already know that so that's not very useful now grin

i'd carry on and see what happens.
then let us know.

if it's been sat around for a while with milk and baking powder in I might be tempted to add a little bit of extra baking powder, is all...

She must be a natural as you are supposed to chuck it all it. And hardly mix it at all.

That's pretty much how I always make muffins.

blush oh, ok grin

Will carry on, with a tad more baking powder, and see how we go on!

Yes, thats why muffins and pancakes are perfect child baking items

Oooh I feel really bad now. I got ever so cross with her. It's because although she is a good reader she is very lazy, and will do anything to get out of reading (and this from the girl who has just read the Hobbit and all the Harry Potters this summer!).

I will go and give her a hug and say sorry to her.

Your basic point (read the instructions first) still stands though - by extreme fluke chance she was right this time, that's all...

Yes stealth, you are right smile

I gave her a cuddle and said sorry for shouting, and she said "It's ok mummy, it's understandable because I didn't do what I should have done" smile

muffins in oven as we speak ...

it is supposed to be dry then wet so a bowl and a jug is what I use and then barely mix

the problem with chucking it all in is that you'll mix it more so they'll be denser

oh and I use veg oil instead of melted butter, they're lighter oh and I only ever use 1 egg

stealthsquiggle Tue 12-Aug-08 14:57:45

I use corn oil instead of melted butter too(less faff)

Well they were fine smile - taste great, though a little heavy!

I told her to mix as little as possible so I guess that definitely helped.

She is a far more confident (and better) cook than me anyway, I shall keep my nose out in future hmm
