How much is your weekly food shop?

We are a family of 4 (mum, dad, DD1(8) DD2(21 months). We are spending anything up to £80 a week on food. This seems a lot. What else does everyone else spend on food and how can I save money.

way too much!

About £80-90 for a family of 5 (incl nappies for 2 kids and pull-ups for the other one)

I dont know how to save to be honest, the prices are going up so much.

Im already compromising on buying frozen onions, mushrooms and peppers as they are so much cheaper, and go a lot further and the 3 veg we use the most.

About £70 a week for the four of us but we only eat meat maybe 3 time a week!

i spent £26 for the week today, dh will have to go and get milk on Thursday for the weekend.

Meal plan, eat out of the freeezer. STICK to the list, do not be tempted by BOGOf offers unless you need the item and have budgetted that bit more.

A really REALLY good place to start for brilliant tips id the Martin Lewis site, money saver expert, there are forums on that. I got brilliant tips.

£30 for me, ds and the dog. We eat one pack of meat a week, something like 500g mince, one whole chicken, or 6 sausages, which make about 3 meals each. I plan meals and only buy what's on the shopping list.

about £40 including milk and bread through the week after shopping for 3 of us.

Agree with meal planning and sticking to lists, saves a fortune. Plus, check out what you actually have in freezer/cupboards before shopping. You might not need to buy some things or may find you have 3 or 4 meals already in there!!

Between £50 - £70 for 6 of us and 2 cats!

We shop at Tesco. I now do it online because we spend so much more wondering around the store picking things up, and online you can watch how much you spend as you go along. Also you can almost always get £10-£20 off your shop in online voucher codes.

yes absolutely check the contents of the fridge and freezer before you write the list.

also, make double of stuff like, pasta sauce, chilli, shepherds pie, and bung in the freezer. Will make a meal up for the following week too.

buy 2 or 3 loaves of bread and freeze for the week.
big packs of crumpets, potatoe cakes etc..in the freezer for breckies.

Buy shops own, not expensive brands.

Washing powder, i buy the little blocks, 2 in a pack, i use one block per wash load, get 24 washes out of a box instead of 12, use the ones with the conditioner in.
clothes are perfectly clean and still smell nice.
use up cupboard contents so shampoos etc lurking in the bathroom cupbourd, cleaning products, make sure i use them up completely before buying new.

it takes effort, but saves a fortune.

deany, i agree about using stuff up as well, have just unearthed a few half used bottles today and needed shampoo this week so can cross that off my list.

zephyrcat, where do you get online shopping discount codes from?

A lot, lot more than this. Easily £200 a week.

Collision · 11/08/2008 21:31

Muffin what on earth do you buy??

I dont have to food shop this week as I have done a meal plan and had all I needed in the cupboard/fridge/freezer!

This week we are eating

fresh pasta with tomato/olive sauce

butternut squash risotto and salad

Spanish tortilla thing with salad

Leftover lamb curry and rice

pasta with tuna and borlotti beans

I will top up with milk and bread but will bake with the boys which gives us something to do and saves money!!

Blimey. I spend about 100-120 for 4 of us and 2 cats. I shop on-line so there are no temptations either!

Must try harder!!!!

Family of 4 - about £100 too.

frankiesbestfriend · 11/08/2008 21:40

£120 a week including wine, cleaning products and toiletries.

2 adults, 1 dd.

Meat or fish nearly every day.

MuffinMclay · 11/08/2008 21:41

I guess we just buy expensive food and toiletries. Plus 3 reasonably good bottles of wine a week. In my defence we never go out or have takeaways.

I really struggle to spend less than £100 a week - 2 adults and 2 toddlers. I can't seem to spend any less - I shop around, buy nappies (twins!) from LIDL, bulk items from Tesco and do my main shop at Sainsburys. I must start making a meal plan and stop falling for so many offers!

Report
ThatBigGermanPrison · 11/08/2008 21:44

3 of us and 1 cat - around £50. But it's goping up. I'm finding myself shopping every 5 or 6 days instead of weekly, because my £50 isn't buying me the food I need any more.
