new fangled electric tiered steamers? anybody got one?

any good? benefits over ordinary stainless steel stacker type? is the timer any good?

they are ok, got one myself but it sits on top of the fridge as it doesn't hold much (especially when my sisters lot descend on me for dinner) easy to use but I tend to stick with my pan top one and when | did use it when I forst got it, I had to keep checking the water tank at the bottom to make sure it didn't dry out before the food was cooked

I've had one for a couple of years - and I always use it for veg. I like it because I can put it on when I go to pick DH up for the station, and when I get back, the veg are perfect. It has a rice bowl thing too, but I've never used it for anything but veg.

we have gone through several, because despite the claims of the baskets and bits and bobs being dishwasher proof, they are not, and with anohter the element went....

But I do prefer the taste of steamed vegetables compared to fresh, so, we use ours regular....just make sure you get a reasonable good make (Tefal is very good) and one with an adequate capacity for your familysize...oh, and don't wash any parts in the dishwasher, because it is a lie, the baskets break, etc....

Oh, I have no experience of those pan steamers...so, no idea how they compare...sorry

How long does it take to cook veg in them? My mum has a 3-tiered one and she leave it on for about an hour! I'm not sure if this is part of her "must cook all vegetables until they resemble wallpaper paste" thing or are they designed that way (if so, do they just steam incredibly slowly or do they steam but then keep warm). It's confusing when my pan steamer steams veg in about 5 minutes...

Tink, the one we had previous, where the element went, took forever....but it must have been faulty....the one we got now, it usually takes about 20 minutes for carrots, and less time for Broccoli, forinstance...
