Probably been done before but what is the best / healthiest breakfast cereal for toddlers?

Currently giving ds (17mo) cow and gate muesli, but so expensive!
He won't eat weetabix or ready brek, and I want him to have something reasonably healthy, but they all just seem so full of sugar / salt -though the muesli is quite sugary too.
Can I just try him with rice crispies or cornflakes, or wholewheat cheerios maybe?
Will continue with the C & G if I have to.

We use porridge in the winter and usually organic cornflakes in the summer with fruit puree on to sweeten them.

Can you try a little honey in the ready brek then slowly reduce the amount?

Porridge.

Shredded Wheat doen't have salt o sugar, but it is Nestle.

I give cheerios, shreddies, rice crispies, rice crispies multi-grain shapes - on their own or in a mixture depending on what dd and ds choose.

Shreddies, own brand mini shredded wheats with apricot/raisin centres, normal muesli, or Gorilla munch all v popular here

Think I'll try him with the shreddies first, then cheerios or rice crispies if not a success. I take it the fibre content is ok for their tums?

DS tends to have a mixture of weetabix and banana (his favourite), rice krispies and cheerios in the mornings, followed by a yoghurt, smoothie or some fruit. Tried him on porridge and he hated it - will try him again when camping in August...

I thnk you have to make sure you don't give them too much fibre because it fills them up too much and then they don't take on the vitamins they need from other foods.

But I might have got that wrong.

DS1 loves what he calls a "combo". rice crispies, cornflakes and shreddies all in the same bowl. He's strated quite a trend at nursery.

add stewed fruit to any of the sugar free cereals everyone's already mentioned to liven them up - taste and colour, esp good in porridge
you can keep back liquor from stewing some things, eg blueberries, raspberries, to make the porridge a lurid colour kids love
plums, rhubarb, most berries all stew really well, as well as obvious apple and pear; apricot and prunes good, too

Shreddies here. My DS has developed a sudden aversion to Weetabix (after I'd just bought a new box of organic ones )

Anyone want them?

We had the same problem after I picked up Oatabix by mistake. Neither DS will now eat weetabix!

Weetabix - I put yoghurt or fruit on as well milk

shredded wheat

Raisin wheats

porridge - with summer fruit mixed in, honey, maple syrup, banana, cinnamon

Which report which goes into great depth about salt, sugar etc.. It is all colour coded though.

Our two have porridge, shredded wheat bitesize, grape nuts, muesli

Nothing beats porridge.

Baby cereals are not always the best for value for money and health.

Children really don't meed things to be sugary to eat them.

porridge with fruit puree is what i give

i freeze cubes of fruit puree and then pop a couple in to the porridge to cool it down quickly

so cheap, so healthy
how can you go wrong

We have porridge here (ds is 19 months) - I usually add golden syrup - dietician says sugar is just a fuel source atm - but he'll wolf it down with or without. I use soya formula milk to get added vitamins in it (milk and wheat allergies!!)

Think I will try porridge / weetabix and shreddies with some fruit puree and/or yogurt in as he loves (some) fruit and yogurt. For some reason am convinced that I want him to like weetabix! Am still cooking and freezing batches of food for ds, so doing fruit too won't hurt too!

Dontneedanything - thanks for the which report, will peruse just now.

I think the likes of shreddies and weetabix are probably the only ones with no added salt or sugar, maybe shredded wheat (and bitesize)too.

I get put off weetabix when I have to chisel it off the bowl when it has been lying for half an hour or so - what must it be like in your tummy!

We usually do eggy bread or a wrap and grated cheese -15secs in mwave to melt.
