vegetarian barbecue ideas please

I've only ever done BBQs for meat eaters, but have a couple of vegetarian guests in a couple of weeks. So far am thinking sweetcorn on the cob; butternut squash parcels; and vegetable kebabs (mushrooms/onions/peppers/courgettes). Sounds a bit boring tho so would appreciate some ideas. Also, I have bought some foil BBQ trays to keep the vegetarian food off the surface meat has been cooked on. But I've never used them - do they work?

'squeaky cheese' kebabs. Marinate Halloumi in lime juice, oil, and herbs, grill in chunks on kebab sticks - fabulous.

Asparagus is nice barbecued - Big at stems not thos miniature ones from Peru. Marinate in lemon and oil and just grill for a few minutes.

Maybe make a spicy coating for the kebabs so they aren't as plain?

Cut the butter nut in half and deseed, fill with cheese and herbs pop back together nad cover with foil, cook in the coals - yummmmmm

Sweetcorn on the cob is great, as is halumi, great big mushrooms instead of burgers for the buns.

"Tin Foil Potatoes"

Slice potates, season, put in some chopped onion, celery, and carrots (small cubes as they take longer)

Season with your fav spices

Blob of butter/ drizzle with olive oil

Wrap in tinfoil

Put on BBQ (about an hour, make sure to turn)

Serve with sour cream

mmmm

Oven Roasted Garlic

Dizzle LOADS of HEADS of garlic with olive oil

put in oven at gas mark 1

cook for about an hour or so

Serve with baguette slices

It comes out all spready, and is so sweet and yum.

When I was a veggie, I really missed the whole sloppy burger experience...

So maybe get some nice veggie burgers or hot dogs.

They don't always BBQ well though, so may have to cook on the stove- thus solving the "seperate food" issue.

Get some haloumi cheese. You can grill it as slabs or cut it into cubes and use it as part of the veggie kebabs.

I don't understand what you mean by the foil trays.

Baked camembert, I slice it it in half and pop a few slivers of raw garlic in, sandwich it back together, wrap in foil, squash back into box (you can only do this with the one that comes in a wooden box)wrap box in foil, chuck on top of the charcoal. Takes about 10 mins. Unwrap, dish up on a plate, dip chunks of bread in it.

hmmm i love bbq'd veggies and am feeling very hungry now. don't forget bananas with chocolate flakes in for afters! (marshmallows are not veggie friendly if your veggie guests are quite strict)

yes purple duck - umm no ta!!

cod - we make up for lack of haute cuisine with lavish humour and lashings of style

brightwell · 11/07/2008 19:21

Ooohhh Cod how can you say that! When we go to bbq's I always take my own stuff as people usually forget to cater for veggies.

Aubergine, sliced into half inch thick slices, brushed with olive oil, seasoned with black pepper, salt and oregano.

Barbecue till charred tender, then sandwich two slices together with natural yoghurt with fresh mint and grated orange zest mixed into it.

wow, so many responses! It's a no meat/no fish deal. Would love to know more about halloumi ; I'd always understood that it was pretty tasteless unless marinated - comments anyone?
Mercy, the foil trays are like the foil dishes you get on things like pies, rectangular, with ridged base with holes in. Specifically designed for BBQs, primarily I think to stop fat etc dripping onto the coals. I saw them and thought a good idea to keep the vegetarian food separate from the meat as we only have one BBQ. But not sure how well they work - ie would I be better just cooking the veggie stuff inside?

veggie hot dogs - buy at esco or sainsbury's and cook well on the barbie or 4 minutes on the hob

Whatever you do, sprinkle with Marigold veggie essence first - transforms

Halloumi is very salty, often has mint on it too.

Paneer on the other hand, bland as you like. But v. nice coated with tikka marinade and grilled
