Horse-shaped cake - OMG

My DD is 6 next week. I want to make her her heart's desire - a horse cake. Can't find a horse's head cake tin locally, thought I might wing it with a bit of cutting and pasting of a square cake but think it will probably be a disaster. Other plan is to make round cake, dye some coconut green for grass and stick plastic horses on it. I want to to think wow and go for the first option but I need a clever cake decorator to advise me!!! Anyone???

I am sure these people will have a horse cake tin you can buy (they're internet)

like your second idea though think that'd work

This method doesn't look too hard: here . I think this is the same method, but maybe a better explanation?

This is one of those occasions where I really hope that DH doesn't walk in and ask me what I'm doing, and I have to reply, "I'm just looking to see if I can find out how you make a cake look like a horse's head, for someone I met on the internet."

Well if you like a challenge you could try to follow the instructions in either of NQC's links .. they really made my brain hurt ... ow

I think I'm going to go for it though - I just have to stop striving for absolute perfection and aim more for the "thanks for making me a great horse cake mum" factor which is where I should be aiming.

When I make cakes I always end up on the phone to my mum saying I'm crap at it and it's not what I planned but my kids always say wow mum and that's what counts I suppose!

IIRC a sheet cake is different from a square tin .. at least they're really big and flat .. kind of like a big brownie tin IYKWIM?

Let us know how it comes out. Yeah, the instructions sucked, but you could see how it was done, and it didn't look too hard. But what do I know, I always just make an uniced carrot cake.

Draw the outline of a horse head on a piece of paper - use the shape of the 2 in NCQs links as a guide. Use this to work out the shapes you need to cut out of one or two square (round would work too I guess) sponges based on the size of tin you have. Ice in chocolate fudge icing and use fondant icing to make eyes (white plus brown smartie) nostrils (brown smartie/black fondant) and a main (roll suasages of black fondant. Or, you could make any colour horse you like!

Today I bought some little plastic horses and a few trees from the cake decorating shop in case it all goes horribly wrong and I have to make a "plastic horses grazing in a field" cake really quickly!
