Alternative for chinese cooking wine????

Is there one?? Recipe calls for it but I have none and don't know where to buy it...

My cookbook suggests sherry, but most people I know are even less likely to have that smile

I would say sherry.
I buy shaoshing wine from the chinese supermarket ..

I've just sloshed in some white wine in the past - seems to work ok. There's never very much (in terms of quantity) in most of the recipes I've used - if it's just a tablespoon or two I would just use bog-standard wine.

Yes, I only need 125mls. But no don't have sherry and would rather mail order the Chinese cooking wine grin.
Will try to get to Sainsbury's on Fri. Do you think they wil stock it. More chance than Tesco or Asda I think....
If not I will just bung in white wine then, thank you.
